Cross Country Skiing at Mt. Bachelor

Planning on playing in the snow this winter? Consider Mt. Bachelor in Central Oregon. This is a beautiful location that offers skiing, snow boarding, dog sledding, snowshoeing, and 56 km of cross country trails. Located about 30 minutes from Sunriver, and about an hour from Bend, this resort is a perfect get away for couples and families.

If you have your own equipment, head to the trails behind The Nordic Center at Mt. Bachelor. If you need to to rent equipment, the friendly, helpful staff at the Nordic Center will get you set up. There are many trails in this area that are well groomed and look like a winter wonderland.

Oops!

Another great location for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is Swampy Creek. The trails in this area are not groomed, so this is not a good place for beginners.

It had been several years since we had been cross-country skiing, so our skills were a bit rusty. We had skied for about an hour and were about halfway through our run when my husband commented that we hadn’t fallen. Well, that totally jinxed it and for the rest of the course, we each fell many times. And those of you who have skied on ungroommed trails know that it is difficult to get up in these conditions. You push with you pole or hand and you just sink down into the snow. SIGH. Once we got back to the car we went straight to the Owl’s Nest at Sunriver lodge for a drink.

Sunriver lodge is a lovely place to stay and offers cross-country skiing on the golf course right outside the back door. They offer a varitey of accomodations including cabins, and rooms in the lodge. We stayed at an Airbnb house in this resort community. Sunriver Village has a a good selection of restaurants, shops and an ice rink for those who want to skate.

Have you been to Mt Bachelor in the winter? If so, please leave a comment with your favorite trails and activities in the area.

Wishing you grand adventures,

Tricia
