As most of you may know, we are currently in the US for the holidays and are thoroughly enjoying our time with friends and family. At the moment, we are in sunny San Diego and have had a fabulous time with my sister, nieces, nephew-in-law, and our little grand-nephew. It’s been an amazingly special time; my heart is full. As a result, I have not taken the time to prepare a proper blog post. So today, I am falling back on my archives and sharing photos of fences; yup, fences. They really do make an interesting medium for photos and sketches.
Fences, railings, and barriers, are made of wood, stone, barbed wire, wrought iron, composite, recycled plastic, and many other materials. They are old, new, pristine, crumbling, attractive, and even eyesores, but I am still drawn to them and have accumulated a good collection of photos. Here are a few of my favorites.

Don’t ever take a fence down until you know why it was put up. Robert Frost.

The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourself in, but you cannot for ever fence it out. J.R.R. Tolkien

If I am more fortunate than others I need to build a longer table not a taller fence. Tamlyn Tomita
I hope you enjoyed this collection of fence photos. I hope to be back on track next week with a proper blog post.
All the best,
Tricia

Enjoy your holidays in sunny California (and not too far away from me in Los Angeles)! The fences look varied and wonderful, and they serve as functional entities to protect and keep away at the same time. Happy holidays!

These are all so beautiful. Fences are an essential part of our daily lives. They serve as boundaries, protect us from unwanted visitors, and enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of our surroundings and they make for fantastic photo subjects. I find that in outdoor photography, fences offer a convenient element to use to compose an image. From using them to lead the eye along leading lines to making them an obvious aid to composing with the rule of thirds, using a well-placed fence line can make life a lot easier for the photographer. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Fences are a very popular object to photograph – on our Caminos in Spain and Portugal we took so many pictures of these. I especially like the ancient walls — they have a story to tell. And the Travelsketcher’s fences are always beautiful to look at, too! Merry Christmas to you and Terry and your family – God bless.

I also have a fence around my house. The fence provides us with a clear boundary, ensuring our privacy. In reality, if we were not disturbed, there would be no need for a fence, right? I hope that one day, the fence will be just as simple as the one in your picture. Numerous stories have been created alongside the fence, and quite a few have emerged in its absence.

Such a beautiful quote by Tamlyn Tomita and what wonderful words to include in this post. What is it about fences that they are so photogenic and compelling? Like bicycles. Thank you for including my fence photo. It brings back wonderful memories of your charming stone cottage in the farm fields of Normandy.
