Thinking of Spain

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, getting away from the chill of winter to a warm, sunny destination is always a treat. And since it has been particularly cold here in Normandie, a break from the winter blues is much needed. We have had snow, freezing temperatures, and when it finally warmed up a bit we got so much rain that the lake near our house overflowed and covered the driveway!

Family and friends in the Pacific Northwest have had a brutal winter and have suffered power outages, downed trees, and unusually cold temperatures. Shirley Riley, a friend in Washington State sent this photo of her backyard.

Needless to say, a break from the cold and snow is what I’m craving now. And since my birthday is in January, there’s an added bonus to escaping the winter blues. In fact, we’re leaving next week for Peñíscola, Spain, a seaside town located between Barcelona and Valencia. We haven’t been there before, but our friends, who are there at the moment, say it’s a lovely place.

In anticipation of visiting Spain again, I’m sharing some of my favorite photos of cities around this lovely country that we have previously visited.

Barcelona

Sagrada Familia

Cádiz

Canary Islands

Madrid

Donostia-San Sebastian

Málaga

And then there’s the tapas and pintxos:

Our sunny get-away can’t arrive soon enough! Do you have a favorite winter get-away? I would love to hear about it, so leave a message if you’re so inclined.

All the best,

Tricia

  1. Sounds lovely! Your photos are beautiful and the food looks delicious. We often go to the Caribbean for a break but now that I’ve retired are thinking of changing that up. Have fun and good weather and safe travels.

  2. Oh no, that seems way too cold for my liking! I would love to visit Barcelona someday – seems like a beautiful city to explore. And the tapas and pintxos … I can taste it while looking at your pictures Tricia! Our winters are thankfully not that cold, so we never have to travel far to experience sunny weather. Enjoy your getaway to Spain – I can’t wait for your photos!

      1. I just checked and yes, that was the only post. I kind of hope you’re staying up on the hill near the castle, it’s lovely up there – but if you’re not, do try and get up there in the evening, it’s such a lovely atmosphere. Or at least it was, in August. Those are some steep climbs up to it, mind you… Have fab time, I look forward to reading about your time there.

  3. Gorgeous. I’m jealous. My morning walks lately have been fraught with danger on icy roads. A long, fast walk in Spain would have been sooo nice.

  4. I haven’t returned to that part of Spain in years, but I love Barcelona and I can imagine its surroundings are equally gorgeous. I dearly miss tapas/pintxos, and I’m looking into a return trip in the next couple of years. Have lots of fun (and order the pork cheek for tapas)!

  5. Oh now that sounds like a great way to escape the cold for a little while! Can’t wait to see your pictures from Spain. My hubby has been wanting to go to Spain more than anywhere. Maybe with a little nudge and showing him your pictures we will be booking tickets there next 🙂

  6. I feel warmer just looking at your photos. It’s minus four degrees Fahrenheit here this morning. We enjoy Jamaica, but we’ll be spending spring break in Portugal this year. It won’t be WARM warm, but probably pleasantly in the 60s. Next year, though? We think we’re heading back to the Caribbean… Enjoy your trip and happy birthday!

    1. Oh my; that’s cold! It’s been that cold in Normandie too. What part of Portugal are you going to? We’ve been to a few places and absolutely loved them all. Peñiscola will be about the same, low to mid 60s, but that beats freezing cold any day! Thanks for stopping by and stay warm!

  7. Traveling to Spain – or anywhere warm and sunny – just to escape the wet and dreary winter weather in Ireland, would be a dream, but the kids are at school, and we have no choice but to wait until the midterm to go anywhere. Have awonderful time visiting Peñíscola. As it’s place I haven’t been to, I would like to read all about it. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. I remember those days, when our holidays revolved around the school breaks, but it’s always nice to get away, any time of year. Thank you Aiva! We will surely enjoy our time in Spain; adventure awaits. 😊 I hope you’re having a nice weekend as well.

  8. Oh the winter has been brutal this year – I feel like we haven’t had sunshine since the first week of September (in fact, we haven’t!) so it’ll be a full 6 months of wet, cold or both in the northern hemisphere. We are escaping in Feb to the Middle East to warm up! Hope you had a wonderful Spain trip!

  9. I certainly don’t blame you for dreaming of a break away from winter Tricia. We have followed events around the world with all the devastating weather that has unfolded and counted ourselves very lucky indeed. In fact, we have had an extremely mild season split between Serbia and here in Georgia where we returned earlier this week. Looking through your Spanish highlights and I see we have been to many of the same places (I lived in Malaga for a year). Looking forward to reading about your birthday trip. Oh, and a belated Happy Birthday!

    1. It truly has been a devastating winter in so many areas. The climate is certainly changing. Like you, we feel fortunate that ours hasn’t been ad devastating as in some areas. I remember that you have lived in Spain; Malaga is a beautiful place too. Thank you!
