We originally planned to stay in Avignon for two months, but partway through our time there, we realized that we didn’t want to leave. We booked another week at our Airbnb apartment so we could enjoy this quintessential, provencal city a little longer. In my humble opinion, Avignon is the perfect French city, not too big, not too small, so much to see and do, with a rich history and multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites thrown into the mix.

We feel like we got to know the city quite well during our stay, and enjoyed every aspect of it including shopping at local markets for ingredients to make our favorite dishes. Les Halles, Avignon’s covered market, quickly became our preferred market and we shopped there frequently.

Les Halles is open Tuesdays – Sundays, and has pretty much any food item one could possibly need. There has been a market at this location since the mid 1800s. The current building houses over 40 vendors and was built in 1974.
We also enjoyed wandering through the city, day after day, snapping photos and stopping in at cafes which allowed Terry some sketching time.

We even enjoyed walking the city after dark, when it was quiet and still. The city is beautiful at night.

One evening, we were approached by a group of five college students from Senegal. Why they stopped us we don’t know, but we stood in the presence of the Palais des Papes and chatted for a good fifteen minutes. We laughed, shared stories, learned of their dreams and ambitions, before they excused themselves to return to their studies. We strolled back to our apartment with smiles after such a lovely encounter.

Another evening we went to a concert at L’Explo, a brew pub featuring local beers. We chatted with many people, danced, laughed and even received bisous (kisses on the cheeks) when we said goodbye. And people say the French are unfriendly?

As theTravelsketcher has written about already, (click here) there is a bar we visited often, just a few steps from the apartment. We stopped by on our last day, and told the server we would be leaving the next day. Our initial impression of her was that she was quite reserved, even a little unfriendly, but when hearing that we were leaving, she gave us both hugs. The three of us chatted for quite a long time before we said au revoir; she even wanted a selfie!

As I mentioned in last week’s post (click here), we left Avignon on October 8th and traveled to Dijon, Kaiserslautern, Paris and then London, spending a few days or more in each location. In London we had our first blog-buddy meet-up with Travelling Han. Hannah is absolutely delightful; we enjoyed meeting her and chatting over a delicious lunch at Lamb Tavern in Leadenhall Market.

We’re back in the states now, and will be flying to Seattle later today. Leaving France was bittersweet, and we each shed some tears as our train approached the Chunnel and we said au revoir to France. We shall return one day; I can’t imagine leaving this planet without visiting again. In the meantime, I have much more to share about France over the next few months.
So ask the traveled inhabitant of any nation, ‘In what country on earth would you rather live?’ Certainly in my own, where are all my friends, my relations, and the earliest and sweetest affections and recollections of my life. Which would be your second choice? France. Thomas Jefferson
As always, I would love to hear from you, so please leave a message if you’re so inclined.
Wishing you grand adventures,
Tricia
Such beautiful photos and thoughts. It seems that Avignon proved to be the perfect place to spend time as this chapter draws to a close and another one begins. Your experience chatting with those students is just one example of many where your paths crossed with others. Such experiences are the best part of traveling. Thank you for your lovely postings and photos. There are many more ahead!

I’ve been following your blog since you began your adventures in France, and it’s incredible to see you explore the country (and other European countries) over the past few years. Avignon is the perfect place to end it all: I find it a small city, but it’s packed full of quaint, little streets and sites that can keep you busy for a lifetime. So awesome you met Travelling Han: I met her in London, and she’s a lovely person! Despite being back in the US, I’m sure you have a lot of France posts to cover, and I greatly look forward to them. Take care! 🙂

I greatly appreciate your support and readership over the years; thank you. I know you can relate after living in France too for several years. It’s been a fantastic experience. Hannah is so lovely, we loved meeting her. There’s a chance we’ll be in SoCal after the first of the year; maybe we can meet up too. Thanks again for sharing!

I love Avignon and have an affinity for France that is hard to ignore (I’m also French-Canadian), so I think I understand. Very bittersweet that you have to leave, but all good things … Looking forward to the rest of your European posts and your further travels closer to home. Cheers.

Your photos of Avignon make me wish I was there right now – it’s just so beautiful. I love a market (especially one with a rich history like Les Halles). Places like this is always the best when you want to buy ingredients to prepare your own food. And that glass of wine with the olives … it just seems so French. Oh, how wonderful that you met Hannah in person – it’s great to see the three of you in one photo. You were in France for what – two/three years? Thank you for all the beautiful places you showed us.

It was so great to meet Hannah; we hope to have more blog-buddy meet-ups in the future. We were in France for 2 1/2 years. Our original plan was to stay for 2 – 3 months. Thanks so much for your comments!

Aww it was so so lovely to meet you both, I’m so glad we managed to find time before you headed back to the US. I hope you’re both settling back OK, the mixed emotions must be really hard to balance at the moment. That photo has come out well, we even all have our eyes open 🙂 Thank you so much for coming to see me, you have a friend for life in England so you know where I am should you ever need it.

It certainly was a nice time, and like you, we’re so glad it worked out. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to meet us.Thankfully, the gentleman who took the photos took several, because there were some with our eyes closed! Right back at you, Hannah, you always have friends in the PNW and are welcome anytime. 😊

Lovely photos, sketches and memories from Avignon. I think I can sense a nostalgic thread running through this article as you look back on your French sojourn. I’m glad that you arrived safely. I love the beautiful and historic market, Les Halles. Having a good fresh produce market really makes all the difference. The little boulangerie is so charming and it’s lovely that you managed to meet Hannah, it’s a great photo of the three of you.

Spot on, Leighton, nostalgic through and through. There are several produce stands in Les Halles, and we quickly found our favorite. We enjoyed many veggie centered meals and lots of delicious fresh fruit during our stay. Meeting Hannah was a highlight; we hope to have more meet-ups in the future. Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your comments! I hope you and Sladja are having a lovely weekend.

You got to meet up with Travelling Han?! How fun! I hope to meet up with her on one of our trips back to England someday.
Spontaneously extending your stay somewhere is the sincerest compliment you can give it. I need to add Avignon to my list.
Welcome back to the States – and just in time for the election. Haha. You may regret your timing. 😉
