During our stay in San José del Cabo, we had planned on taking a whale watching cruise, and were quite disappointed when it was cancelled due to high winds. We had hoped to see some whales like we saw in years past near Reykjavik, Iceland, and San Juan Island in Washington State.

Sadly, it was not meant to be, so we returned to our hotel and took a mournful walk along the beach.

Towards the end of our walk along Playa Costa Azul, theTravelsketcher and I noticed a large crowd near our hotel. As we got closer, we noticed a sea turtle digging a hole in preparation for laying eggs. Soon she stopped digging and proceeded with her mission.

Then she proceeded to cover the nest. At this point, a hotel security officer arrived to make sure no one bothered her.

At this point, the woman standing beside me said ‘au revoir’, to which I smiled and replied, ‘oui, au revoir et bonne chance. C’était incroyable!’ She looked quite suprised when I spoke to her in French, so we continued talking for about five minutes, which made the experience even more special. Turns out she’s from a small town in Quebec and speaks very little English.
As we were heading back to the hotel, we noticed that the security guard had cordoned off the area to protect the nest.

Last year while in Acapulco, we visited a turtle sanctuary and got to release some little hatchlings. Click here to read about these little ones. We never dreamt we would actually get to see the mature version up close.

Afterwards, we returned to the pool at the hotel and as I was texting with our daughter and son-in-law, sharing the videos I had just taken, I was actually teary-eyed. I absolutely love sea turtles, so witnessing this act was a true highlight for me.

But wait, the plot thickens! As we were heading to our room to change for dinner, we chatted with a woman who said she and her husband were sitting on the beach when the turtle came out of the water. She said the turtle came straight to them and proceeded to move her husband’s beach towel with her head! He quickly figured out that she wanted that spot, so he moved. She then started digging in the exact spot where he had been sitting. She knew what she wanted! The woman also shared that it’s late in the season for turtles to be laying eggs, so we feel very fortunate to have witnessed this event.

At dinner that evening, we chatted with our server about the event. He shared that he frequently dives in the area and often sees turtles. He said they’re quite friendly, and enjoy having their necks rubbed. He also mentioned that in Mexico, anyone who harms or kills a sea turtle will spend 20 years in prison. I whole-heartedly support this.
Witnessing this event was the icing on my birthday, vacation cake, and made the missed whale watching tour a distant memory.

As a side note, we spent the first part of our San José del Cabo vacation in a small, locally owned and operated hotel in the Gallery District. We then moved to a hotel on the beach for the last part of our stay, which was quite disappointing. Click here to read theTravelsketcher’s review of the beach hotel.
As always, I would love to hear from you so leave a message if you wish.
Wishing you splendid animal encounters and grand adventures,
Tricia

How wonderful to see this turtle and you definitely got some good videos. A fantastic replacement for the whales! Every time we have booked whale watching it has been cancelled because of wind or other weather, including twice in Iceland (once off the south coast and once off the north).
Thanks for the review of the hotel. We used to enjoy a very small inclusive in Dominican Republic – especially when all I was looking for was total relaxation and some good weather away from a northern winter – but during our last stay saw that it had gone downhill quite badly. We’re thinking that we don’t want to visit one of these again either. Cheers.

It truly was an amazing experience and one I’ll cherish forever. That’s interesting about your cancelled whale watching tours as well. I remember that the one in Iceland was quite rough!
It’s too bad that you had a similar experience with an all inclusive resort. As you say, it can certainly go downhill quickly. Thanks so much, Lynette, for sharing!

Am also sorry you missed out on the whale watching, of course, but what a moment to witness! Am surprised the turtle laid her eggs so close to humans even
‘displacing’ one of them, but happy to know the guard took care the eggs were safe! Actually unbelievable but terrific there is such a long prison sentence for the crime.

Seeing the turtle definitely made up for the loss. She was determined to nest in that spot and nothing, not even humans could stop her! Agreed; it is heart warming to know that Mexico protects them. Thanks, Eha, for stopping by!

Dear friend, an epic turtle twist on your birthday trip—missing whales but scoring front-row seats to her epic egg-laying show? Pure magic! Love the French chat surprise and that beach towel story—talk about turtle boss moves. So jealous of your Acapulco hatchling release too. Happy belated bday.

Aw how lovely – such a shame about the whales, but seeing the turtle nesting must surely have made up for the disappointment. How wonderful. And Happy Birthday 🙂

It sounds like a very memorable birthday. The beaches here in Vero Beach are among the most important turtle-nesting habitats in the western hemisphere. They are frequented by three species of threatened or endangered sea turtles. There are loggerheads, greens and leatherbacks. There are strict rules when nesting and when the the hatchlings start.

So, I imagine you see them frequently? It’s good to know they’re protected there too. Thanks for your comment!

Would you believe I am not a beach person so I’ve only seen them a couple of times. We have a lot of conservation groups that monitor them and keep people pretty far away from their nesting areas. I’m glad you had such a wonderful experience..

I’m actually not much of a beach person either; but I do enjoy a walk on a pretty beach on occasion. It’s good to hear that there are conservation groups that monitor their safety. Thanks again.

Wow, what an incredible and unexpected moment. A sea turtle laying eggs right in front of you feels way more special than any planned tour. I love how the evening unfolded, from the quiet beach to the French conversation and the turtle choosing her exact spot. What a perfect birthday surprise and a memory to treasure

Bummer that your whale watching tour was cancelled due to the weather. And hey, a walk on the beach doesn’t sound like that bad of an alternative, especially given that you came across a sea turtle in the sand! What a special experience!

I loved the videos and reading the story about the turtle who knew what she wanted and aimed to get it. I agree with you about the punishment and am really pleased to hear that Mexico is protecting the sea turtles. It was fate that you missed that whale watching tour!
