Container gardens are very popular and ubiquitous. They’re perfect for apartment dwellers, as well as anyone who wants to add a splash of color to their home or garden. Tucked in the midst of a flowerbed, they’ll add dimension and creativity that is ascetically pleasing. Lining a walkway or placed on steps, they’ll make for a pleasant and welcoming entry to a home or business. Personally, I love them and have always had planters everyplace we’ve lived. Here are a few of the ones I created:

I have found many interesting and clever ones in my travels. People tend to use any type of object for a planter from bikes, boots, shoes, furniture, watering cans, and even an old phone booth (box). Creativity at its best!

And then there are the traditional planters in terracotta, marble, ceramic, wood, metal, and plastic.

  1. Oooh. I love reading about trips from hell. Can’t wait!
    Love these containers. We’re saying goodbye to our flora here in Minnesota, so it’s nice to see the splash of color. I LOVE that phone box used as a planter. Some creative things I’ve seen used as planters include ski boots (in alpine France) and a bed frame (in Colorado).

    1. The trip from hell is pretty wild, I’m looking forward to sharing it. The phone booth (your husband would call it a box I think?) was in Bath Spa; so creative. You’ve seen some creative ones too; a bed frame would make for a large planter. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I must say you have visited some pretty gardens on your travels Tricia! I love all the containers with different flowers in them – bikes seem to be quite a popular item.   10. I love a good plant pot – I spend hours doing mine at home each spring and getting them ready. This year I’ve been lucky as the plants I bought in early May are STILL flowering in early October!! I love the wheelbarrow and bike basket full of plants :-)….I might actually steal the wheelbarrow idea for a space in my garden….

    1. Hey Hannah; how cool that we share a love of container gardening. You must have a green thumb since your spring plants are still flowering; well done! That old wheelbarrow was left behind by the previous owner when we bought the house, since it was in pretty rough shape, I turned it into a planter. Send a photo if you do the same.   11. I am in awe of the creativity exhibited throughout this post. This is something I have never put it into practice but would love to try if we ever, ever settle down properly in our own long term home. There are quite a few telephone box containers across Britain these days and they never fail to make me smile. It was great to see Neville again by the way.

  12. I’m a big fan of container gardening as well and have quite a few planters despite having a big backyard. You’ve done a wonderful job with all your planters and pots! I love how all those old bikes have been repurposed to grow flowers.
