Oh Avignon, I love this town. I fell in love with it on our first visit to France close to 30 years ago, and that feeling has not waned over the decades. The whitewashed buildings, chapped and blistered from the scorching sun, faded blue shutters, narrow, twisting cobbled alleys, the ancient walls that surround the old town; what’s not to love? This town is an architectural gem.

Construction of the walls began in 1355 and they were completed just 15 years later. The circular formation covers an impressive 2.7 miles (4.3 km). More on these in future posts.

Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic palace in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must see during your visit to this historic city. Nine popes served here between 1309 and 1376. The palace, built in just twenty years beginning in 1335, is an impressive site. More on the palace in future posts.

We arrived on August 1st, after visiting various locations in France and Luxembourg. It was hot, really hot, but we needed to go foraging for food. We exited our building, walked a short distance to Rue des Teinturiers, considered the most beautiful street in Avignon, to the closest grocery store. As we turned the corner, we saw a huge crowd just ahead of us. As we approached, a man stopped us and explained that it was a movie shoot. He said go ahead and walk through, but please don’t talk or look to the left. Feeling a bit like Lot’s wife, we made our way through.

Interestingly, while chatting with my cousin a few days later, I learned that he had a part in the production and would be in town for the final shoot. More on my dear cousin, an actor in French cinema and TV, in the coming weeks.
Just wandering through this amazing city is a photographer’s dream.

We booked this apartment for several months, knowing that August would be a time for us to unwind and process all our recent events. We focused on blog posts, editing photos, (sketching for theTravelsketcher) and just relaxing after the intense few months of travel, packing and shipping our belongings to the states. We knew that September would bring cooler temps and opportunities to enjoy this amazing city.

However, there was a short reprieve from the excessive heat on theTravelsketcher’s birthday in mid-August. We wandered through parts of the old town we had not yet seen, and had an absolutely amazing lunch at Au Jardin des Carmes.

On our first morning here, as I was just waking up and enjoying a cool breeze through the open window, this little feline jumped in. She was quite talkative and very friendly, and made herself right at home. We have missed our sweet Neville immensely, so her daily visits are very welcome. She has a family here and is well cared for, but like most cats, she wanders.

Most mornings in August, we were up early, to get a daily walk and pick up any essentials we needed. The heat doesn’t bother theTravelsketcher as much as it does me, so he often went out in the afternoon to a cafe on Rue des Teinturiers for an afternoon libation. It’s turned into a regular stop for him, and me as well, now that the weather has cooled. Yesterday he enjoyed chatting there with a retired art professor from Paris. You can read about that here.

We are thoroughly enjoying our time in Avignon, and are looking forward to exploring more of this amazing city now that it’s cooler. I’ll have much more to share in the coming weeks.
As always, I would love to hear from you, so feel free to leave a message.
Wishing you grand adventures,
Tricia
I can see why you are so enamored with Avignon. I’ve never been, but your pictures make me want to explore its old streets soon. Maggie

I’m very impressed by the photographs of Avignon. I think with all the textures on the walls, they would be great in black and white too. I love the light in them. Bravo!

Thanks so much Ian; coming from you that means a lot. I was thinking just today that I should get some shots in black and white. Thanks again!

Tricia, through your lens, Avignon is absolutely beautiful! I am surprised to read how quickly the walls and palace were built – it seems to me that in the 1300s the builders were skilled and fast! Haha, it would have been very hard not to look left (maybe you guys are part of the movie set too)! I love the dog in the fountain. Happy belated birthday to Terry – seems like a delicious lunch to celebrate … in a very special place!

I was also surprised to hear they were built so quickly. Ha; maybe they were expert craftsmen! The dog had the right idea that day; it was really hot. Thanks so much Corna!

I’ve visited Avignon on three different occasions, especially the Festival d’Avignon during the summer. It’s such a beautiful little fortified city, and I’m glad you had a wonderful time exploring all that there is to offer there!

Great choice of place for somewhere to hang out for a few months. It is everything you say, and so unbelievably photo friendly. Anybody with an artistic bent (like a sketcher for instance 😂) would be in some kind of heaven. It was on my wish list since the wish list was born so I was delighted to wander its streets in the summer sunshine last year, although we only did it on a day trip from Aix-en-Provence. Enjoy your time there, I am sure that you will!

It’s so beautiful, but I can never talk or read about Avignon without telling the story of my parents’ honeymoon. They were young and had no money, and my mother’s father was a vicar. My parents were escorted by a local clergy to Avignon to a local house, whereby the priest separated my parents in to different bedrooms and then got in to bed with my Dad and tried to kiss him! The perfect honeymoon I’d say hahahaah. I’m glad your experience was infinitely better and your photos are perfect.

Avignon looks charming with heaps of exquisite architecture, history and photographic opportunities. What a lovely feline visitor you have, her fur is glistening. As a cinephile I’m looking forward to hearing all about your actor cousin and the production you stumbled upon. Glad to hear that temperatures are cooler. We are still in the mid to high 30s unfortunately on most days, but it seems that colder weather is approaching our part of the world too.

Avignon is indeed a beautiful city. We are thoroughly enjoying our time here. It’s the perfect location to end our French adventure. I hope to share more about my cousin in a future post. It seems like with climate change, the intense weather is arriving earlier and staying longer. I hope it cools off there soon. Thanks so much Leighton!

An apartment there for several months? What a dream! You have some great shots, especially that monk walking away. Mon dieu! Your cousin is a French actor? Amazing. I wonder if, in walking by (and not turning to the left) you became part of a shot’s background. I love the cat! I love the dog in the fountain!

Yes, it’s been fabulous but the time has gone by too quickly. We actually just got back to Avignon after spending a weekend with my cousin and his partner. He’s lived in France for 20 years, and has no plans on returning to the states. More on him in future posts. I hope we’re not in the film! We love the little cat and the dog had the right idea to stay cool! Thanks so much for your comments!
