Today I was going to blog about our time at the Oregon Coast this past week, but when looking at the Bing Photo of the Day this morning I learned that today is the 25th World Turtle Day. This day has been set aside to bring awareness to these wonderful creatures in hopes to protect them and their habitats.

It’s no surprise to learn that humans are turtles biggest threat. We sadly learned about this fact years ago when we were visiting friends at their beach house on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our host asked us if we wanted to visit the resident, neighborhood sea turtle, affectionately named Albert. Absolutely, we said. We walked a few blocks from their home to a large salt-water pond where we saw a full grown sea turtle swimming peacefully in the tranquil waters. He swam right up to us and looked at us expectantly. Our host had brought some vegetable scraps which he greedily devoured as we tossed them into the pond. He followed us as we walked around the pond and kept an eye on us as we left. As we were walking back to their home, our host told us that he had a partner at one point, but some disgusting thugs decided one night in their drunken stupor, to kill the poor thing. I’ll spare you the gory details. Humans can be complete bullies; sigh.

A few days later, we visited an art gallery in Lahaina, on the island of Maui. The first thing that caught our attention as we walked in was a full size bronze statue of a sea turtle titled, “Lone Survivor”. Wow; we were instantly drawn to it and thought of Albert. There wasn’t a possibility for us to purchase it at that particular time, but they did have a much smaller one available. We purchased it without hesitation, and still to this day have it on display in our home.

After that experience, turtles have had a special place in my heart. I seek them out, donate to causes to help them and capture images of them whenever possible. Here are some of the photos of turtles and tortoises I’ve captured in our travels.

This island in Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens, Tokyo, is shaped like a turtle which symbolizes longevity in Japanese culture.

There were many turtles sunning themselves there.

A world away from Japan, these desert tortoises enjoyed the Nevada heat.

Some of you may remember my post about releasing baby sea turtles in Acapulco earlier this year. Click here to read that post.

There are many ways we can help turtles and their habitats; click here if you’re interested in learning more.
Next week I’ll share more about the Oregon Coast. We even saw some baby seals lounging on the rocks with their moms. More on that next week.

I hope these specific days set aside to bring awareness to various animals and environmental concerns will help preserve and protect them for future generations.
All the best,
Tricia
This was sssooooo interesting (she responded ever so slowly in honor of National Turtle Day!) Such great stories and photos. Be sure to catch CNN’s 2025 series ‘The America’s’ narrated by wonderful Tom Hanks. It’s awe inspiring and a delight to watch the coverage of all the animals. I can’t remember which episode–but one dedicated a ton of interesting time to turtles!

Love your slow reply; 😉. Ooh, that sounds so interesting, and Tom Hanks is always lovely to listen to. Thanks so much, Shirley!

Rosanne and I love turtles and tortoises as well. I had no idea there was a world turtle day. We will plan to celebrate them. Rosanne has one of those turtle bracelets that allow you to track a specific turtle as it travels through the ocean.

As do I! I remember chatting about that when we had lunch recently. Love my bracelet. Thanks so much, Dave! I always appreciate your comments.

Happy World Turtle Day! I also got notified of the day this morning. Turtles are adorable creatures, and it’s shameful we as humans are their biggest threat. By bringing awareness to it, we can hopefully keep the turtle population thriving. Thanks for sharing, Tricia! 🐢

They certainly are curious and friendly creatures. It is shameful how we humans have treated them, and other animals as well. Let’s hope that someday turtles and other animals will be treated better. Thanks, Rebecca!

Oh, I DO love turtles and all your photos but cannot get my eyes off the mama seal looking after the baby seal . . . how truly gentle and lovely! And Tom Hanks is currently well-and-truly on our TV screens here Down Under with ‘The Americas’ series . . .

You can’t imagine why anyone would want to hurt them, Tricia. We often see them, relaxing on a log on one of the sea inlets around here. The sculpture is beautiful. Happy weekend!

The stupid and horrific things people do when intoxicated. Reminded me of something similar that happened in the park in Colchester (not turtles).
During the cleaning of the pond in November the fish were removed and transferred to a large container which was vandalised during the night resulting in the death of 45 fish including all of the oldest, rarest and most valuable Koi Carp that had lived in the pond for many years. A youth, who was drunk at the time, was later arrested and charged for the crime

It’s a good thing he was arrested. There’s a special place in hell for people like them.
BTW, I enjoyed your posts about India’s lost wonders, but I think my comment got lost in cyberspace.

Someone killed Albert’s mate?! What on earth is WRONG with people. I am sometimes so ashamed to be human, given what we’re capable of. This is a beautiful post, and turtles are truly amazing.

It’s a shame to hear that humans are the biggest threat to turtles. How awful that someone killed Albert’s partner. Turtles have a special place in my heart as well. Love the sculpture and set of shots.

It is truly horrible. At least there were many residents in the neighborhood who cared for him. Thanks for your kind words.

So sad to read about Albert’s partner and her tragic death. It is really shameful that humans are the biggest threat to turtles’ survival. I love turtles too, they are such beautiful animals. I have fond memories of visiting a sea turtle sanctuary in Malaysia. Great post, Tricia.

It is really shameful that some humans are capable of such extreme cruelty. Turtles are amazing animals. I’m glad to hear you were able to visit a turtle sanctuary too. It was a highlight for us earlier this year in Mexico. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts.

This is such a wonderful post, dear Tricia, as it raises awareness about the threats facing these remarkable reptiles and encourages positive human action to ensure their survival. Over the years, I’ve read too many posts about Sea turtles becoming entangled in fishing gear and dying. It is devastating to know that humans are still hunting and killing these wonderful creatures for their meat, shells, and other parts, fueling illegal trade and exploitation. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Thanks so much,Aiva. It is shameful that animals suffer so much due to the demands, carelessness and cruelty of humans. At least there are some groups that help to protect them. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you have a great day.

Happy Turtle Day! What a great post to celebrate such wonderful creatures. Anyone who would hurt a turtle like that is an evil person. There are a lot of turtles in our area and we started carrying a towel in our car so when we see a turtle on the road we can stop and help carry it to safety.

Agreed; it’s simply evil to hurt an innocent animal. Oh Meg, that’s a wonderful thing to do. Have you found many on the roads?

I think at least once a week we use our turtle towel, but with the summer coming I’m sure it will be more as the turtles are trying to get to the ponds
