Milestone birthdays always seem to make us pause and reflect on our past achievements, experiences and life in general. We often think of our family, and the friends we’ve made along the way, and maybe even those we’ve crossed paths with who were less than friendly. No matter what we focus on, these occasions are worthy of our attention and celebration.
Last week, we celebrated theTravelsketcher’s milestone birthday. As I mentioned in last week’s post, we had a nice lunch and a visit to Pittock Mansion on the day itself, and later in the week, we enjoyed a party at Tim and Lisa’s beautiful home.

It was Tim’s birthday too. Interestingly, their birthdays are just three days apart. Terry and Tim have been best friends since they were teenagers, and I have mentioned Tim and Lisa in many previous posts; click here to read more. They are dear friends and traveling buddies, and we have shared many adventures with them in several places around the globe.

Lisa pulled out all the stops for this party. She decorated the back yard stunningly with hanging lanterns, flowers, a beautifully set table and other special touches.

We even hired a caterer, Alison, owner of A Wonderland of Food, who prepared a multitude of delicious appetizers.

TheTravelsketcher didn’t want a big party, so we limited the guests to our daughter and son-in-law and one other couple, our new dear friends, Karen and Diana.

There was much fun, revelry, music, singing and dancing after enjoying our meal.

It was a wonderful party and everyone had a great time.
Switching gears here to a new topic: a few weeks ago, theTravelsketcher and I each received an email invite to a happy hour function sponsored by WordPress. We were quite intrigued so we accepted. Once we arrived, we learned that WordPress was hosting a four day WordCamp conference in Portland. Click here for details. Apparently, these are yearly events held in various locations around the globe.

The event was attended by many WordPress employees, employees of the umbrella company, Automattic, as well as other bloggers. If we had known about the conference we would have attended, however, we never received any notices about it. Interestingly, every blogger I talked to during the event had no idea about the conference either, just the happy hour. So, when I chatted with WordPress founder, Matt Mullenweg, I politely suggested that they kick up their advertising. Later in the evening, we met Matt’s assistant, and she confirmed that most bloggers mentioned the same thing, that they had not heard about the conference, and she promised to do better in the future.

Regardless, it was a fun evening, we met bloggers and WordPress employees from Australia, The UK, Brazil and all over the US. We had a few questions that we received answers for and found all the WP employees to be friendly and helpful. We connected with other bloggers and all in all it was a great evening. Oh, photography was not allowed, and I actually followed the rules. 😮💨
Have you heard of or attended WordCamp or a WordPress sponsored happy hour? If so, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
Wishing you grand adventures,
Tricia
A happy belated birthday to TheTravelsketcher! So glad he got to experience it with loved ones. I’ve heard of WordCamp before, but I’ve never attended– how fortunate it took place in your city! Hope you had fun 😊

Looks like a wonderful birthday party! Fabulous food and friends. Love the CS Lewis quote.
I have never heard of a WordCamp or a WordPress sponsored happy hour – they probably wouldn’t host one in New Zealand anyway (and if they did, it would be in Auckland).

The birthday party was so nice; we thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
It’s interesting to see reader’s comments about the WP event; no one seems to know about them. Thanks for stopping by!

My take was that the event was first for folks associated with WP, developers, marketing, etc but also open to bloggers, too bad more bloggers don’t hear about them, was a bit of luck on our part.

Wow! What a feast! And it looks like you had a tremendously good time in that beautiful setting with your dear friends and family. 😊 Lovely. Birthday greetings to the Travel Sketcher. 🎂
I have never heard before of Word Camp or WP Happy Hour and I have been on WP since 2012. It’s doubtful anything like that is held in Canada though.

It was a delicious feast and a super fun time with dear ones; we are fortunate!
That’s pretty much what everyone is saying; they’ve never heard of the WP events. Canada would be a lovely place to hold one. It’s such a beautiful country and far more welcoming the US at the moment. Heavy sigh. Thanks, Lynette!

What a great birthday spread! I wouldn’t be surprised if your party food surpassed the WP conference happy hour food! I have never heard of this conference, but if I were invited, I just might attend.

We’re so glad we decided to have the party catered, and Alison prepared a delicious feast for us. I have to admit that the happy hour spread was pretty good too. That’s what everyone is saying; they’ve never heard of these WP events. Thanks for commenting!

Wow, that is a truly beautiful garden and a wonderfully decorated place to celebrate one’s birthday! Happy Birthday to Terry! This is the first time I’ve ever heard about such a thing as special networking events for the WordPress community. It would be a wonderful event to attend, offering meaningful conversations in a relaxed setting and providing an opportunity to meet and connect with the people behind WordPress.com. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Happy Birthday to Terry! It really looks like you had a lovely party with family and friends new and old, in your friends’ beautiful home and garden. The food looks fantastic. I always prefer very small, intimate gatherings to any kind of large and loud celebrations. The atmosphere seems great from your photos: relaxed and cheerful. I’ve never heard of WP conferences, the happy hour sounds like a great way to connect with other bloggers.

It’s neat to hear that Terry and Tim have been friends since high school! Looks like a beautiful double birthday celebration. I’ve actually never heard of WordCamp or any WP events/ conferences before. It definitely sounds like they need to do better in terms of creating awareness!

Agreed; it’s a rare occurrence that a friendship lasts so many years. Yes, they need to do a better job of advertising these events. Thanks for your comments!

It’s lovely to have such good friends (we are also blessed with a few of them). Lisa did a great job creating a beautiful party atmosphere – love all the finer details … oh, and the food! Happy belated birthday to Terry. Never heard of any WP event (but I doubt they would do something like that here in SA anyway).

It has been way too long since I’ve thrown a proper party, and I can’t think of two people I would rather throw a proper party for than my dear friend Terry and my beloved husband Tim. Happy birthday, gentlemen, and may this next year bring many blessings to both of you. Thank you Tricia for creating the delicious menu and working with fabulous caterer Alison in Wonderland for bringing it to our plates and forks. We are excellent co-party planners, dear friend, and we had a ton of fun doing it!
