We plan, God laughs. Yiddish proverb
We have been looking forward to our European vacation for a long time, but have been concerned about all the flight cancellations we’ve heard and read about in the news recently. We purchased our tickets in February, and there was one change to our itinerary since then. The morning of departure, we found out that our flights had been changed again, for a third time. Here’s how it played out.
We originally booked a nonstop flight from Seattle to Helsinki, which included a 30 minute puddle-jumper from Portland to Seattle. With the 9.5 hour flight to Helsinki, we would be traveling for about 16 hours total, allowing for travel time to the airport, etc. About six weeks ago, the flight to Helsinki was cancelled, and we were rebooked on a flight to Chicago then to Helsinki; adding a few additional hours to our total travel time. Tuesday morning, just a few hours before heading to the airport, we found out that due to mechanical problems, we were now booked on this crazy route; Portland to Dallas; Dallas to Heathrow; Heathrow to Helsinki, with a very tight connection at Heathrow. Thankfully we didn’t have to change terminals, but we waited on the tarmac for close to an hour before we took off, thus making our total travel time about 28 hours.
It takes real planning to organize this kind of chaos. Mel Odom

We finally arrived in Helsinki, and checked into our hotel in the city center around midnight on Wednesday; much later than we had hoped to arrive. Needless to say, we haven’t had as much time to explore this friendly, welcoming city, but I have managed to take a few photos.
In our jet-lagged haze, we wandered through the area near our hotel, taking in the feel of the city.

Old Market Hall dates back to 1889, and is the oldest market in Helsinki with a variety of restaurants, shops and a wide selection of items for sale.

Helsinki Cathedral is not far from our hotel, but was closed yesterday due to the Ascension Day holiday. We’ll visit later today.

We’re looking forward to exploring this lovely city more today, now that we’re a little more rested.
Interestingly, we’ve had only a few travel challenges and disruptions in our decades of traveling. Here’s hoping the rest of our trip will fall into place a little smoother.
Check out theTravelsketcher’s post to learn more about our experience getting here, and a special event for his eldest son.
As always, I would love to hear from you, so leave a message if you’d like.
The adventure begins!
Tricia
I wish you a lovely stay here in Finland!

Oh, 28 hours of travel time 🫣 … that saying of ‘it’s more about the journey, not the destination’ … it sounds kinda like your trip! Beautiful photos from the plane and Helsinki looks like a lovely city through your lens. I trust the rainbow is a good sign. Enjoy the rest of the trip, Tricia.

Glad you got there eventually! Helsinki is a great place to visit. I’m not sure how much time you have, but the gallery opposite the railway station, the Ateneum, is well worth a visit, as is Kiasma.

Good to know, thanks! We leave tomorrow, but we’ll be back for a few days before we head home at the end of June.

Both quotes in this posting are PERFECT (and hysterical). Your photos–as always–are beautiful which shows that the end is always worth the journey even if the journey is filled with crazy pitfalls (all good stories, though!) The next leg of your journey will be wonderful—and I’ll bet your return journey will be on a lear jet. Hey, you deserve it! Enjoy every minute (and we will see you soon in Paris!)

Thanks so much, Shirley! Flying home in a private jet sounds perfect after the extremely tight quarters we were in on the way here. We’re looking forward to seeing you both in Paris!

28 hours of travel time is a lot, dear Trciai, especially as it involves international connections and significant time zone changes, but I am glad to hear that you have safely arrived in Europe. I really enjoyed your beautiful photos from the Finnish capital city. It looks like a vibrant and walkable place that offers a variety of attractions and things to see for visitors. Can’t wait to read all about your European adventures. Take care xx

I think a lot of it is due to oil shortages. Thanks, Allison!

I was seeing your travel woes on Instagram, and you two had quite the journey! Flights have been wacky these days with things going on in the world, but I’m super glad you finally made it to Helsinki. Looks like you’re enjoying the Finnish capital in the warmer months, and I look forward to reading more of your Euro trip soon!

It certainly was a grueling experience. You’re correct, the oil shortages and high prices are taking a huge toll on many industries around the globe. It’s still quite chilly here, but the bright, blue skies are lovely. Thanks, Rebecca.

Oh no what a nightmare with your travel. I am so glad you’re in Helsinki safe and hopefully you can enjoy the city; it’s a beautiful place.
I had a horror show of a logistical nightmare getting to and from Singapore in April. I was due to change in Doha, but obviously those were cancelled – long story short I ended up having to go the other way round via LA (!) – taking twice as long and being charged an extra £1,500! But I transited via the Middle East last week on the way back from India, and all was fine again. Fingers crossed it settles.

Oh Hannah, I’m so sorry you had to endure that because of our…; heavy sigh. And what a huge added expense. I’m glad that your recent travels have been less impacted. Yes, fingers crossed it settles soon. We’ll be here (mostly in France) until the end of June, and hoping our trip home isn’t disrupted. Safe travels!

It sure was, we’re glad to be here after all that. Our time in Helsinki was too short, but we’ll go back for a few more days before we head home. We’re currently in Prague; as you know, it’s amazing! Thank you!
