Thrills and Spills – Speed Boat Tour, Kotor, Montenegro

There are a multitude of small boat tours from Kotor to the surrounding areas, including speed boat tours, water taxis, catamaran tours and even private tours, all of which are a great way to see the stunning scenery. These vary in amenities, destinations, time commitment and of course, price. Our lovely host at Kotor Nest recommended a three hour speed boat tour with Poseidon Boat Tours which was loads of thrills and fun.

Our boat was small seating just 10 guests, and our driver set the scene with lively music and thrilling, sharp turns. There was lots of laughter as the waves crashed over the sides of our small boat! If you choose a speed boat tour, be prepared to get splashed!

Leaving Kotor.

Our first stop was the small town of Perast, where we had time to wander on our own. There’s a lovely promenade here, restaurants, churches and much more. We returned a few days later for a more leisurely visit including lunch, so more on Perast in the coming weeks.

Arriving in Perast.

From Perast, we circled Our Lady of the Rocks.

According to legend, two sailors discovered a madonna and child icon on a small reef in the bay in 1452, and decided to build an island there. For the next 200 years, people in the area would occasionally toss rocks on the reef and eventually it was large and strong enough to build the Roman Catholic church that stands there today. More on the church and museum in the coming weeks.

We also circled St. George Island which houses a 12th century Benedictine Monastery. St. George is privately owned by the Catholic Church and is not currently open to visitors.

Kayaking or canoeing are great options to get a closer look at these islands.

Next we took a long ride out to the Blue Cave, passing Prevlaka Peninsula, at the border of Croatia and Montenegro along the way.

The Blue Cave is known for its brilliant blue water and unique beauty. It is quite large too, measuring 650 feet (200 meters) long, 41 feet (12 meters) wide and is a protected natural area by the local government. It was difficult to get good photos here due to the reflecting light, and where I was seated, but these may show a bit of the cave.

There’s a beautiful lagoon near the cave where we pulled in so a young couple from Canada could swim. The driver kept the rest of us entertained with some homemade plum liquor he made from fruit from his orchard.

Another stop was a submarine tunnel used by the Yugoslav Navy during the 1970s to hide the subs from enemy ships and planes. The entrance was cleverly disguised with fake rocks to make it less apparent to potential attacks. There are several tunnels in the area and they have not been used for decades, but today are major tourist attractions.

We all chuckled at the driver’s choice of music to set the scene.

Tunnel entrance.

We saw an abundance of beautiful scenery and interesting things to see along the way.

An old shipwreck.

It was a fun and thrilling tour, and due to the intense heat, I was relieved to get splashed several times. Poseidon Boat Tours offers multiple tours per day. We chose the three hour tour which was €40 per person. If you go during the summer, or on a hot day, I would advise a morning tour.

We’re back home now and are enjoying being close to family and friends, and catching up on all that we missed while we were gone. However, I have much more to share over the coming months about our time in Montenegro and our month long stay in France.

As always, I would love to hear from you, so feel free to leave a comment.

Wishing you grand adventures,

Tricia

  1. You captured so many beautiful photos, dear Tricia. The Blue Cave looks incredibly scenic, and so does Our Lady of the Rocks Church in Kotor Bay. It certainly looks like an unparalleled destination for exploration and contemplation alike. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Thanks so much, Aiva. There is certainly a lot to see there. Contemplation was a bit challenging at Our Lady of the Rocks when we went back a few days later, given the crowds. But it was quite interesting. Thanks for commenting, and I hope you’re having a wonderful day.

  2. I laughed when I read that your driver entertained you with home made plum liqueur while you waited for the swimmers. Wow! He must have been quite a character. I enjoyed your photos and videos but I’m not a fan of caves. I’ll tolerate them but they’re not my favourite. The boat ride though? Fantastic! You captured some gorgeous sights. Cheers.

    1. Yes, he was a character, which made the tour so much more enjoyable. I’m not a fan of caves either, but I could easily see both openings which eased the stress a bit. Thank you so much, Lynette, I’m glad you enjoyed the post and photos.
