Lunch With Friends in Chartres, France

Chartres is famous for its stunning cathedral, Cathédrale Notre Dame de Chartres. It is majestic, magnificent, stately, and as my dear friend Tim says, all the superlatives apply to this stunning, elegant cathedral. It is one of the best preserved examples of Gothic art with statuary and stained glass from the 12th and 13th centuries, and many other special features.

This masterpiece has survived multiple fires, wars, revolutions, and is still standing tall today. This impressive cathedral, a true masterpiece, is worthy of our devotion and attention. We visited in May of 2023 with our friends Tim and Lisa, when they were visiting from the states. I’m not going to spend much time on the vast, lengthy history of this UNESCO Heritage Site (1979) since it is incredibly detailed, but click here if you want more information.

However, when we visited Chartres last month, we went to visit dear friends, Nikki and Alun, and of course, Rosco, rather than le cathédrale. Nikki and Alun were neighbors of ours when we lived at LaThebauderie in Normandie, and we quickly became good friends. Since leaving France, we have kept in touch frequently via WhatsApp and video calls, but those will never replace an in-person visit.

They met us at the train station and of course, we had to greet Rosco first, who was wiggling, yipping, and squirming with delight once he saw us. Nikki says we received his family greeting. We haven’t seen them for two years, but he remembered us. Animals are truly amazing.

It was an extremely hot day during the canicule (heatwave) that hit France in mid-June, so we slowly strolled in the direction of their vacation apartment, enjoying the sights and a cool beverage along the way.

It was surprising that there were no crowds in front of le cathédrale as we walked past, most likely due to the extreme heat. Once we arrived at their vacation apartment, Nikki prepared a delicious lunch which we thoroughly enjoyed as we continued our nonstop talking, laughing and reminiscing.

Rosco got a treat as well.

We enjoyed the coolness of their apartment along with the views of the surrounding area.

After enjoying a wonderful visit and saying à bientôt, we slowly strolled back to the train station where we found a much needed air-conditioned restaurant while we waited for the train back to Paris. Spending time with friends is always special.

Later that evening, Nikki sent these photos from the nightly light show.

It was a special time with dear friends and we look forward to seeing them again someday in the future.

As always, I would love to hear from you, so leave a message if you’d like.

Wishing you dear friends and grand adventures,

Tricia

  1. Chartres, yet another city I haven’t (yet) been to. It looks beautiful. I am not at all religious or spiritual, but I enjoy visiting grand old churches when I travel. The majesty and history of them are magnificent.

Thanks for the post and for adding another place for me to add to my list of places to consider visiting. (An already impossibly long list, I’m afraid.)

    1. I hope you get to visit someday, it’s truly a special place. The old cathedrals are amazing to experience, even if you’re not particularly religious. The quality and workmanship are amazing. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. Like you, my travel list is quite long. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I have never been to Chartres I am sad to say. I had a postcard of the cathedral that my older brother sent me when I was a child from there so I sort of feel it has been part of my life for ever. The town itself is so pretty.

  3. Chartres is magnificent, truly a wonder. It’s been years since I visited but I remember it well. How lovely that you were able to visit with your old friends. And Rosco loves raw carrots! Our departed, much-loved Rudy loved raw carrots also and peas, too. I don’t see that often. Cheers.

  4. Wow, just look at that mighty cathedral; it’s stunning, especially at night time when illuminated. I enjoy visiting cathedrals whenever I travel due to the incredible architecture, stained glass windows and a peaceful atmosphere. It is also quite fascinating to see what people were able to build back in the day without modern technology. I have never been to Chartres, but the town looks lovely and would be a perfect place for a day trip from Paris. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  5. Well, once this dog-lover got past the obvious charms of Rosco – have been once for the day . . . not seen enough but was left with a warm and happy memory . . . would be magical to be there in night-time . . .

  6. Real friends are so important, whether you see them often or rarely. Nice you were able to catch up. The light show reminds me of one we saw this summer in Poland. What they can do now with lights is amazing.

  7. Rosco giving you the full family greeting after two whole years got me — dogs never forget the people who mattered. And strolling past the cathedral for a cool drink instead of going in during the canicule sounds exactly right; some visits are about the friends, not the landmark. So glad Nikki captured that night light show for you.

  8. Oh, little Rosco, what a lovely moment that must’ve been. Sounds like you had a wonderful time catching up with dear friends. Delicious food and rooftop views punctuated by greenness are great complements to a conversation between friends. Nikki’s night light show photos are a wonderful bonus too. Such a sweet reminder that real friendships hold steady no matter the distance. I don’t have many of those left these days, but I treasure those few that have stayed the course.

    1. Wonderful comment, Leighton; thank you. Rosco is one of the sweetest dogs we’ve met, with personality plus. We had a wonderful time with friends and wish it could have lasted longer. Like you, we have just a few friends from long ago, but more recent friendships seem to be more meaningful; perhaps it’s age, je ne sais pas. Thanks again, it’s always nice to hear from you.

  9. Chartres is a beautiful place – and definitely so much more when you can combine it with a visit to good friends (and adorable Rosco)! Your photos of the narrow streets and of course the cathedral are lovely (as are Nikki’s photos and videos). What a privilege it is to have such good friends – even if you are continents apart.

  10. Beautiful time spent in Chartres! Did you also visit la maison Picassiette? Despite la canicule, it looks like you had a lovely time with good friends during your time abroad. Thanks for sharing, Tricia!

    1. That is certainly true! We were quite surprised to see the empty square in front of the cathedral. We were the only crazy ones around 😜. Thank you for commenting; I’m looking forward to hearing about your time in Temecula.
