Lake Quinault, WA

Lake Quinault located in the southern part of the Olympic National Park in northwestern Washington State makes for a peaceful and relaxing get away almost anytime of year. Located on the Olympic Peninsula, the current lodge was built in the 1920s by the same architect who built Old Faithful Lodge in Yellowstone National Park. It was completed in a record 53 days at a cost of $90,000 and still stands proudly and majestically today.

This rustic lodge has kept its original charm. Our room, with a partial view of the lake was quiet and comfortable.

The weather was unseasonably warm so we enjoyed dining al fresco with a view of the lake.

We visited just after Labor Day weekend, when the wildfires on the west coast were at their peak so the air was a bit hazy, as you can tell from the photos.

The area is perfect for hiking, kayaking, canoeing, swimming and many other activities. There is a 30 mile scenic loop drive around the lake which I highly recommend, although the road is rough and narrow in places. Along the drive you will find the world’s largest Sitka Spruce, waterfalls, nature trails and campgrounds.

The Kestner Homestead, dating to the late 1800s is an interesting place to visit. There is a 1.3 mile loop trail along which you will see barns and old farm equipment.

The beauty of the rain forest with its majestic fir and cedar trees, moss covered branches and ferns is what draws me in and makes me want to stay.

Rooms at the lodge are surprisingly affordable for a hotel located within a National Park and start at just $128.00 per night. The Roosevelt Dining Room offers a wide variety of options, but is limited to take out at the moment due to COVID-19 restrictions. There is a grocery store across the street that offers sandwiches and salads. However, food options are a bit limited so you may want to bring some snacks and beverages along.

Lake Quinault is a tranquil and relaxing place to visit, I highly recommend a trip to this unique area.
