International Mountain Day

Today, December 11, is International Mountain Day, a day set aside to celebrate and recognize the dynamic ecosystems and importance of mountains. Global warming impacts mountains by melting glaciers, killing off plants, trees, animals, and damaging the habitats of the people who live there. By increasing awareness and through conservation, hopefully we can preserve these beauties.

In honor of this important day, I am sharing some photos of mountains. The one below is a favorite of mine; it is of theTravelsketcher at Heather Lake in Washington State with beautiful Mt. Pilchuck in the background.

Mt. Rainier, aka Tahoma

The two photos below were taken in Denali National Park on a warm, clear day in September a few years ago, a rare occurrence for this area.

At Crater Lake National Park we hiked to a fire watch tower and were rewarded with a beautiful view of Mt. Shasta.

Cross-country skiing, Mt Bachelor, OR

Yosemite National Park, CA

Yosemite Falls, Yosemite National Park, CA

Tunnel View, Yosemite National Park

Forty-Nine Palms Oasis, Joshua Tree National Park, CA

Joshua Tree National Park, CA

Grand Tetons, Wyoming

Lake Yellowstone, Wyoming

Death Valley National Park, CA

Tromsø, Norway

Et bien sur, no blog of mine is complete without including a photo from France. The village of Gordes is nestled in the Vaucluse Mountains in Provence.

Through conservation and consideration we can help preserve the eco systems of mountains. A few tips are to haul out what you take in, stay on designated paths, don’t get too close to wildlife, and be cautious with fire. Hopefully, by being respectful visitors, mountains will be well preserved for future generations to enjoy.

All the best,

Tricia

  1. Given my eternal love for mountains, your post with all the wonderful photos is like music to my ears.

I find that people who love mountains are a different group, unique and alike at the same time.

They welcome the elements. They relish in them. They welcome solitude and isolation. They welcome discomfort. They don’t fear the outdoors but instead feel part of it. They suffer when away from the mountains and almost always answer the calling. They never get used to the beauty and understand how unique each excursion, climb, or run can be.

Thanks for sharing, and Happy International Mountains Day 🙂 Aiva xx

  2. Beautiful. Makes you want to keep looking up…!
It would be neat if one day you post a blog with a series of your photos next to the Travelsketcher’s watercolor interpretation of the same thing…)

  4. Happy International Mountain Day! What a gorgeous selection of mountains, especially many from California, my home state! Gordes is also a beauty, and it’s incredible how some towns have built themselves on the face of the mountain! Thanks for sharing your photos with us. 🙂

  5. Be still my mountain loving heart- I had no idea there was such a day! But really, what an important day. All your pictures are great, but my favorite is of Grand Teton. Brad proposed to me at Grand Teton and the skyline is etched in his ring so that has always been a special place for us. 🙂

  6. Though I was born and raised in the Midwest, I’ve been a mountain lover from a young age. I consider my 2.5 years living in the mountains of Montana to be a real gift. Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos of what I consider the “best” landform.

  7. Another great photo collection and a very thoughtful reminder of the majestic beauty and importance of mountains. I used to spend a lot of time in the Scottish Highlands and I find myself often longing for those familiar views of Ben Nevis.

  8. Wow Tricia, you have been privileged to see so many beautiful mountains around the world. Your photo of Tromsø in Norway remains a favourite with me, but I can understand why that photo of the Travelsketcher with Mt. Pilchuck in the background is special to you – the beauty and tranquility in the photo is almost palpable.
