Oregon, My Favorite State

Throughout our marriage, theTravelsketcher and I have taken multiple trips to Oregon. Portland is his hometown, and we have family and friends who live there. In fact, we plan on moving there when we return to the states later this year. I have been fortunate to have visited many locations around the globe, but in my humble opinion, Oregon, and the Pacific Northwest in general, has some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve seen.

The spectacular Oregon coast

Oregon has a tremendous wine industry with over 900 wineries, and more popping up each day. We have visited many of these in the Yamhill County area. Some of our favorites are Ponzi, Torii Mor, Sokol Blosser and Argyle. Many are located in beautiful settings with views of the valley.

Torii Mor has some delicious wines. The wine maker is from France, and the wines are of the Burgundy style. Sokol Blosser also makes a wide variety of wines. On our flight to Japan a few years ago, one of the featured wines was Sokol Blosser’s Evolution, a delicious, light, fruity white blend. Argyle specializes in sparkling wines; we served their Knudsen Vineyard Brut at our daughter’s wedding.

The Oregon Coast is one of the most beautiful coastlines I have ever seen. One stretch in particular in the southern part of the state near Brookings, is the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor. Samuel Boardman was the state’s first superintendent of parks. You will discover breathtaking views and interesting rock formations along this 12 mile stretch of highway.

We stayed at a little cottage right on the ocean near the corridor; I could easily spend several weeks here.

The Portland Waterfront Blues Festival is always a fun time. We’ve attended several times with our dear friends, Tim and Lisa.

Along the coast in the northern part of the state are the remains of the Peter Iredale at Fort Stevens State Park. The ship ran aground in October 1906. theTravelsketcher remembers going there with his dad when he was just four years old. He says it has deteriorated and sunk in the sand quite a bit since then. Click here to see images of the ship over the decades.

Crater Lake National Park is another stunning place to visit. At one mile deep, it is the deepest lake in North America. There are many hiking trails here that offer spectacular views of the lake and distant mountains. We hiked to a fire watch tower and were rewarded with this gorgeous view of Mt. Shasta.

Mt Shasta

Another one of our favorite places to visit is Sunriver, in Central Oregon. This resort community offers many activities including hiking, canoeing, fishing, biking, skiing and much more. It is close to Mt. Bachelor which is a popular destination for winter sports.

The Paulina Lake Loop Trail, not far from Sunriver, is a 6.7 mile hike that is mostly flat and offers nice views. I hiked this with some friends many years ago. We stopped for a picnic at the far end of the lake where our picnic was crashed by a very greedy little critter!

If you’re into rock climbing, check out Smith Rock State Park.

Wallowa Lake Located in Northeast Oregon is yet another activity packed area to visit. We went horseback riding here.

Multnomah Falls along the Columbia River Gorge

Sailboat on the Willamette River

I spent a lot of time in Hood River, OR as a child. My grandmother lived there and ran an apple orchard with her husband. We visited a few years ago, click here to read that post. The visit brought back many fond memories.

There is so much to see and do in Oregon, I have just barely scratched the surface with this post. I’m looking forward to living in this beautiful state and seeing even more of what it has to offer.

Do any of these areas look appealing to you; if so, which ones? As always, I welcome your comments and questions.

Wishing you grand adventures,

Tricia

  1. Now then, this is interesting. We have some long standing friends who live near Eugene, Oregon, and therefore we also have a long standing invitation to come and explore. I think we need to bring it up the wish list a bit, judging by the information in this post!

  2. Oregon looks and sounds like a place we’ll really enjoy too — a beautiful coastline, 900 wineries and lovely hiking trails … you can’t go wrong with that Tricia! I love the photo of Multnomah Falls and look forward to getting to know Oregon better through your lens!

  3. This gorgeous posting, both words and photos, is a real love letter to Oregon. We also know that you love France. That’s the beautiful thing about love – – there’s a lot to go around in life ‘grande avennture.’

  4. I couldn’t agree more about how the coastal scenery along the pacific coast in Oregon is beautiful. The Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor was one of the highlights from when we took a road trip in Oregon last spring. We wanted to visit Crater Lake National Park, but it was still buried in snow.

  5. Ah, so you ARE moving back. Sorry if I missed a post that said that (when we’re traveling I usually take a break from the blog entirely). We went on a road trip with our Bobbie many years back – coastal Oregon up from northern California until we made east for Portland. We were kind of checking it out as a possible retirement destination. We really liked it, but it was summertime and the winds were relentless. When we asked a local, they said it’s always like that in summer but the winds die down in autumn. Wind happens to be my least favorite weather feature, so that was a deal breaker for me. Still, we loved Newport so much we stayed an extra night. Also, I want to get back to explore the central corridor with Eugene and the other cities, and when we get Bobbie 2.0, one of the first trips we’ll do (if I get my way) is out to see Bend and that area of eastern Oregon that looks like the desert.

    1. This is the first time I’ve mentioned it, so you haven’t missed anything. I’m right there with you about wind, I really dislike it too. Normandie is very windy too. Anyway, I absolutely love Bend, Sunriver and the high desert area of Oregon. It would be a great place to retire. Be sure let us know when you visit, it would be great to connect.

  6. Every time I visit Oregon, I just feel overwhelmed with all the beautiful scenery. They have every kind of beautiful scenery. It has been many years though since I was up there. Maybe I need an Oregon trip next time I go out west. That’s exciting that you’re planning to move back there 🙂

  7. Beautiful post Tricia about what looks like an exquisitely beautiful corner of the world. I am mesmerised by the little cottage near the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor you stayed in. I wouldn’t mind spending an extended period there myself. I am looking forward to discovering Oregon further through your photos and writing.

  8. Aw it’s absolutely lovely Tricia, and I’m excited for you with your move. I’d love to visit Oregon one day (I’m an athletics nut, so end up in Eugene but have never stayed longer than a meet…. next time I will make it a proper holiday to explore some of the state, and I know who to come to for some advice 🙂

  9. I can definitely see what you mean about the natural beauty, Tricia. Some of those views are stunning. Cee lives there, doesn’t she, and as well as flowers sometimes posts scenery. I hope you’ll find somewhere wonderful to live.

  10. The Oregon Travel Bureau needs to hire you! Your post made me love Oregon even more than I already do. And It has spurred me to travel within the state a bit more. Thanks for posting the photo of us at the Blues Festival. That was fun to see. We can’t wait to welcome you back!

  11. That’s so exciting, Tricia 🙂 I’ve never been to Oregon but as I follow a few bloggers from that part of the world, I have learned that Oregon is quite diverse offering vibrant cities, charming towns, sprawling countryside, majestic mountains, and an abundance of lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. Also – a while back I was hooked on the television series called The Grimm that where filmed in and around Portland and I fell in love with calming rivers, a snow-capped mountain, and quaint, tree-lined streets and ever since wanted to visit. Plus, they have the most beautiful waterfalls and beaches ( I am looking at you Cannon Beach) in the world. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
