Lan Su Chinese Garden, aka the Garden of Awakening Orchids, is a glorious, walled garden in Portland’s Chinatown neighborhood. It encompasses one full city block and was inspired by the gardens of Portland’s sister city, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China.

Kuang Zhen designed the garden with the help of 65 artisans from Suzhou. Five hundred tons of rock are incorporated into the many features, some of which were brought here from China. This relatively young garden took 14 months and 12.8 million dollars to complete before opening in September, 2000.

We visited yesterday, which was a spectacular, sunny spring day; a perfect day for strolling in a tranquil garden.

There’s a teahouse in the garden where you can enjoy a pot of tea and look out over the garden. We didn’t stop in, but will next time we visit.

There are a multitude of penjings tucked in various locations throughout the garden.

Lan Su Garden is located at 239 NW Everett St., Portland, OR 97209. The garden is open daily from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, but closes earlier in the winter months. Admission is $14.00 for adults with reduced prices for students and seniors.
What do you think of Lan Su Chinese Garden? As always, I would love to hear from you, so leave a message if you like.
Happy Spring!

Happy Spring, Tricia! 🌼 That’s such a gorgeous garden and seems like a real oasis of serenity. I very much enjoyed looking through your photos. Our Japanese garden here is much smaller but I enjoy how peaceful and relaxing it is.

Thank you, Lynette! The garden truly is an oasis in the hectic city. Portland has a Japanese garden too, which will be visiting soon.

Interestingly, I’ve been to Suzhou’a garden before, but not Lan Su in Portland; they look almost identical to each other! Brings back great memories of my time in China, and it’s great there’s a piece of it closer to home!

That’s lovely. I can’t believe it was so empty. That would definitely go on my next Portland itinerary.
The office workers who face the garden probably don’t get much work done. On they other hand, I’m sure they leave less stressed each day.

Isn’t it though? I meant to add to the post to arrive early since by the time we left, there was a long line to get in. I hadn’t thought about the office workers; good observation. Thanks for commenting!
