Big Gulch Trail

A hike in a serene, forested area is a great way to recharge when the stress of life builds up. And it’s an added bonus when the trail is in an urban area, preventing the need for a long drive to a distant trailhead. One such place is Big Gulch Trail, a hidden gem in the city and a great place for a short hike.

There are multiple trails in this area that are all well marked.

We usually start on the South Fork. This trail meanders along a steam with a variety of flowers, berries and old growth trees to see.

After about one mile, you’ll come to a fork; at this point we usually turn right and head up the long, steep hill.

A few years ago after reaching the crest of the hill, we were greeted by a man playing a ukulele! This time we were greeted by some rabbits that quickly scurried away.

Just before the crest of the hill, we take a right where the trail twists along the edge of the gulch. You’ll find ferns, more flowers and in some places you’ll see the trail below.

There are multiple trails in the area, so you can take a short hike or a longer one depending on how much time you have.
